Tour Itinerary– subject to change Day 1 Catch our connecting flight from Amsterdam to Arusha, Tanzania. Upon arrival, you will be met by our guides and transferred to our lodge. Depending on lodge availability we may have breathtaking views of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru.
Day 2 Arusha to Tarangire National Park. You will awake to a new world this morning. After a briefing with our guide, you will leave Arusha by Land Rover, crossing the Masai Steppe on your way to Tarangire National Park, Tanzania’s fourth largest and one of its most diverse. Here, as soon as you enter the park gate, the wildlife viewing begins. Zebra, wildebeest, bushbuck, dik-dik and guinea fowl will regularly cross our path, unbothered by our presence and going about their daily routines. Arrive in time for lunch at our lodge, settle in and head out again in the afternoon to capture dramatic lighting in the bush. Stay night in lodge.
Day 3 Tarangire National Park. Rise and enjoy a hearty breakfast before enjoying a full day of wildlife viewing out in the bush. The Tarangire River, which bisects the park, provides a year-round source of food and water for the resident and migratory wildlife populations, but we will also explore woodlands and short grass plains in search of leopard, lion, reedbuck, gerenuk, Grant’s gazelle and more. The large elephant populations in Tarangire are quite notable, but birders will be especially impressed by the variety of species, which number over 500. After a full day in the bush, we will enjoy relaxing at the lodge this evening. Stay night in lodge.
Day 4 Ngorongoro Crater. Depart Tarangire in morning, heading in a northwesterly direction. The impressive Great Rift Valley Escarpment will come into view – a 2,000 foot high wall that rises up, improbably steep and incredibly tall, out of the flat plains. Head up the winding, switch-back road and into the Ngorongoro Highlands. We’ll continue through rural farming region as we approach the Crater itself. We’ll arrive at our next camp in time to settle in and enjoy lunch before beginning our wildlife viewing this afternoon. Take the road down to the Crater floor, where we’ll begin exploring this unique geological marvel. Lakes, forest, savannah and an astounding population of about 30,000 animals within 10 square miles, it is no wonder that the crater is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. On the floor the true splendor of the place is revealed. The roaming wildebeest whose incongruous features seem to have been pieced together at random, to the pride of lions escaping the glare of the sun under the shade of an acacia tree are the treasures of the day. At the afternoon’s close, take the serpentine road back up to our lodge for refreshments, dinner and a cozy night’s sleep.
Day 5 Ngorongoro Crater. Take a full day to continue our exploration of the crater floor. The area is world-renowned in its reputation for being one of the only places on earth where you may see all of the Big Five at once: Lion, Leopard, Bull Elephant, African Buffalo and Black Rhino. To maximize our time with the wildlife, we’ll enjoy a boxed lunch at a scenic spot on the floor. We’ll depart before sunset for the comfort of our lodge where we’ll have time to discuss the multitude of sightings today and log them in your safari journal.
Day 6 Serengeti National Park. Rise early today; departing at about 6 am for the Serengeti, we’ll make our way around the southern edge of the crater rim, spotting the occasional hyena, elephant or African buffalo along the way. At Olduvai Gorge, make a brief stop at the museum to view some of the incredible finds of Drs. Louis and Mary Leakey. By late morning, we’ll arrive at the Serengeti park gate where a sign welcomes you to “The World As It Was in the Beginning.” The plains seem endless from this vantage point. We’ll meander through the wildlife-rich Serengeti on the way to our lodge for a full afternoon of wildlife viewing. A picnic lunch along the way will allow us to spend more time exploring.
Day 7 Serengeti National Park. On your first morning in the Serengeti you may even spot giraffe or zebra grazing in the distance. After breakfast, we’ll begin our quest to discover abundant wildlife and fascinating wildlife behavior. This morning we’ll have the option of joining a Serengeti balloon safari (advance reservations required, pending availability). The experience begins with a pre-dawn drive to the balloon launch site, where you are given a briefing on your impending adventure. As the sun rises, you lift gently off the ground, enjoying a bird’s eye perspective as you skim over the tops of acacia trees, meander over the Seronera River and finally land in a scenic location where champagne and a full English breakfast await. Lunch is served at our lodge and the rest of the day is ours to enjoy a quiet afternoon on your verandah or to join the guides on another wildlife viewing drive.
Day 8 Serengeti National Park. For a different perspective on the scenery, we’ll move to a lodge located in a private location. Arrive in time for lunch, having experienced wonderful wildlife viewing along the way. Out on the plains, we’ll be looking for warthog, jackal, eland, kudu, reedbuck, baboon, topi, hyena, gerenuk, giraffe and more. Near water sources such as the Mara River, we’ll be on the lookout for some of the largest crocodiles in Africa, hippos, kingfishers, egrets, monitor lizards and more.
Day 9 Serengeti National Park. More wildlife viewing is on the agenda today, our last full day in the Serengeti. Take a picnic lunch as we head out on the trail in our trusted Land Rovers. Roll down the windows, or stand up to take advantage of the customized roof hatch, feeling the fresh air rush past as you navigate winding paths and secret trails in your pursuit of interesting wildlife sightings. With this perspective, you’ll have unhindered 360º views. This evening when we return to the lodge we’ll savor the brilliant equatorial sunset as we enjoy refreshments and snacks.
Day 10 In the AM we’ll head to Manyara—this small park is sandwiched between the Rift Valley escarpment and Lake Manyara. It is a pretty location, with a good range of game, including giraffe, elephant, baboon and the rarely seen tree-climbing lion. We will concentrate on the remote southern sector which remains a decent area for safari. We’ll arrive in the afternoon in time to catch the wildlife in their afternoons routines and preparing for their night activities.
Day 11 A full day exploring the Manyara area looking to capture the perfect shot for giraffe, elephant, baboon and lion as we’ll get close to all. Lunch on the trail. We’ll begin to wrap up our safari and begin our trip prep to head home—wherever that may be.
Day 12 Manyara to Arusha. After a final morning of game viewing in Manyara we’ll fly back to Arusha. We’ll have a chance to pick up a few last minute souvenirs if you’d like. We’ll head off to our rooms which are provided so we can prepare for the final journey home. Grab a shower, rest, or take a swim before we transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for our departing flight.
Day 13 Arrive in Amsterdam and connect to our final destination back home.
Day 14 Arrive home with many memories and photographs! We hope you enjoyed your photo tour!
